Biography and story of Alexander Mc Queen’s dresses
Alexander McQueen was born on March 17th, 1969 in the East End in London. His real name was Lee McQueen and his father was a taxi driver. From his earliest age, McQueen made dresses for his three sisters, and immediately expressed his intention to become a fashion designer. He was an apprentice for the Anderson & Sheppard Company in their small tailors in Savile Row.
His boss was impressed by his book, and pushed him to go further. He went on to study fashion and joined the very prestigious St. Martin’s school in 1992, where he got his diploma.
His collection was entirely purchased by Isabella Blow, the stylist who persuaded him to call himself Alexander McQueen.
He got his reputation from his first dress collections straight away: the terms “controversial” and “shocking” stuck, and he was named the enfant terrible and hooligan of British fashion.
He was immediately noticed by the professional community, and in 1996, he joined the Givenchy couture House where he was appointed Director of creation, following John Galliano. He stayed there until 2001.
Alexander McQueen was the youngest stylist to have earned the title of “British designer of the year” three times from 1996 to 2003.
In 2000, he gave up over half (51%) of his business for the Gucci group to develop.
He launched his own collection for men in 2002. It was under his own eponymous label that he finally distinguished himself.
He opened his stores in major cities such as Milan, New York, London and Los Angeles.
He diversified into other activities, creating sports shoes with Puma, two perfumes for women, ‘Kingdom‘ and ‘My Queen‘, and as well as a handbag called ‘Novak’, a tribute to actress Kim Novak.
Alexander McQueen also collaborated with many artists such as hatmaker Philip Treacy, jeweller Shaun Leane, singer Björk – for whom he made outfits but also video clips.
In February 2010, Alexander McQueen was found dead in his London apartment, a matter of days after his mother’s death.
