Biography of Karl Lagerfield
Let’s take a look at this exceptional designer’s career and at some of the key dates that have marked Karl Lagerfeld’s fashion history.
He was born in 1938 in Hamburg, Germany. A dandy with a slender silhouette, a grey-white pony-tail, an immaculate shirt, a sober a well-cut dark suit and tie, and dark glasses.
He arrived in France in 1952, and soon left the family home to go to Paris at the age of 20.
Winner of the international fashion secretariat contest, he joined the House of Balmain from 1957-1962.
Then Karl Lagerfeld became the artistic director of Chloé where he stayed until 1983.
After joining the prestigious Chanel fashion house, Lagerfield became the ‘final cut’ artistic director for all the collections – haute couture, ready to wear and cruise collections.
1965 : At the same time, he worked for the House of Fendi, creating the logo.
1984 : The House of Lagerfeld opens on the Champs Elysées fashion avenue. Black & white are constant design features.
1986: Karl Lagerfeld receives the “Dé d’Or” award for the best haute couture collection.
1998 : Creation of the Lagerfeld Gallery photography exhibition.
2004 : Creation of a collection for H & M.
Karl Lagerfeld defines himself as a professional dilettante.
He is also a photographer, a caricaturist and owns a bookshop as well as a publishing house.
He has created costumes for:
- La Scala Opera, Milan
- The Florence Opera
- Various ballets
He has taken part in the creation of costumes for different films:

- Callas forever, by Franco Zeffirelli
