Biography: Thierry Mugler

Thierry Mugler, the great fashion designer born in Strasbourg in 1948.

Thierry Mugler was passionate about dance and joined the ballet corps of the Rhin National Opera at the age of 14.

As the young man also loved Art and architecture, he studied decorative Arts at the same time.

He left his hometown at the age of 18 and went to live in Paris where his self-assured style and originality created much interest. He got into creating logos and windrow dressing. He also started designing clothes and evening dresses. While working for “Godule”, a boutique in Paris, he became a freelance designer and created his 1^st personal collection called “Café de Paris” in 1973.

He collections catered for Parisian women who loved elegant dresses. Thierry Mugler designed dresses for exuberant, sophisticated women. Thierry Mugler’s originality could be seen in his choice of materials he used for his creations such as latex, metal, fur… His daring attracted attention. Throughout his collections, we discover his vision of femininity: Amazonians, flower women, divas and other Barbarella.

1977: He presented his first collection, and opened his first boutique in Paris the following year. He also created his first men’s collection.

1984: 10th anniversary of the Mugler fashion house. His A/H 85 collection was presented at the Zénith, in front of 6,000 people.

1986: Opens a boutique in Geneva.

1987: Opens a second boutique in Paris

1992: Presentation of the first Haute Couture dresses by Thierry Mugler. We are reminded of his love for the stage through his spectacular shows and the costumes he creates for artists such as Mylène Farmer and the Cirque du Soleil.

1993: Launch of his production site in Anvers and opening of a boutique in Brussels

1996: He created his « Angel » perfume

2000: He takes time out from the fashion world to develop other interests such as photography and perfume design, which shows him to be a truly polyvalent artist.

2003: Permanent closure of his fashion house

2005: Creation of his « Alien » perfume

2007: The New York Times evoked the major influence of Mugler’s style on other designers such as Balenciaga, Dolce & Gabanna, Alexander Mc Queen.
