Anyone who knows anything about fashion will know Madame Grès (1903-1993) and her taste for asymmetry and her singular way of creating Antiquity reminiscent drapes that appear sculped directly on the body. Among her many designs are some distinguished little black dresses of course.

Madame Grès, white dress, black dress, and more dresses

If you are in Paris at the moment, plan a visit to the Bourdelle Museum. The exhibition was meant to end this weekend, but, great news, it has been extended until end of August ! You will discover that her designs have a sculptural elegance, which we understand better when taking into account the sentence Madame Grès will have repeatedly uttured throughout her life time

« Je voulais être sculpteur. Pour moi, c’est la même chose de travailler le tissu ou la pierre » (I wanted to be a sculptor. For me, working fabric or stone is the same thing)

At the musée Bourdelle, under the exhibition Madame Grès, la couture à l’œuvre these sculpted dresses find a legitimate home. As contemporaries of her time followed the ever changing fashion infatuations , impervious to these trends that tinted the season collections, she prefered to sculpt unique designs, the immense quantity of which made for a collection. A Madame Grès masterpiece can be identified by its apparent simplicity and purity that hides the etrenally extreme complexity of her know-how.

All I can do is recommend this exhibition that will enable you to see for yourself 80 models lent by the musée Galliera and some private collections, made complete by an additional 50 original photos, including works by Richard Avedon and Guy Bourdin. It will be your task to seek out the draped evening black dresses among the numerous white and ivory models…
