The MMV (Marché de la Mode Vintage), held every year in Lyon, celebrated last weekend its 10 years of existence and remains the event that federates the largest number of visitors and exhibitors within the different events pertaining to vintage fashion in France. Each year the selection of exhibitors gains in quality and in number, and over 25 000 visitors, with a particular accent made on professionnals come from abroad, especially those from European cities where vintage is strongly present such as Edinburgh, London, Brussels and Vienna. And so I set out myself, in search of a few LBDs… vintage of course.
A little black dress from the past…
A little bit of history first for those who know not of this unique event. The concept we owe to Nadine Gelas, director of the Lyon Université de la Mode, who in first place wanted t organize an event in the aim of promoting vintage fashion in France and of enabling addicts to meet up and share, discuss, exchange on this one trend they all had at heart. For sociological reasons (we’re in looking for our past, reassurance, quality and objects that are timeless and last throughout the years at a time where the future disquiets us and reliable products of good quality are increasingly difficult to find), this passion for vintage passion benefits from an ever increasing popularity, and is what makes the idea of dedicating a weekend to the 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s decades truly ingenious and successful. This event remains unique in France, a place where you’ll find clothes, accessories, shoes, hats, fabrics, buttons, as well as small furniture and design objects. The exhibitors are chosen for their chic and often labelled items. The atmosphere is always cheerful, festive, with music and shows.
This year a jazz performance interpreted by Compagnie SYLVIE KAY, with the kind participation of the STUDIOS DE DANSE ALICE KAY dancers animated the central stage on both days, the Esmod Lyon fashion school organised a fashion show in the aim of retracing decads of history inspiring themselves from great designers from the 60s through to the 90s using only vintage fabrics and scraps found here and there (tye result was amazing, I completely forgot I was looking at salvage materials! Well done!), a tombola offered each the possibility of wining coupons to send in the « Carreau Créateurs » area where exhibitors from the Village des Créateurs greeted you to discover their work, photography exhibitions, a best vintage look competition to participate in the look hunt in the hope of winning a star weekend, an old fashioned hair salon corner… no time to get bored!
As for me, I went on the LBD hunt, but also kept an eye out for anything that could best accessorize my new little black dresses… I therefore would like to share with you a few of my favourite findings. Deep V neck in the back of a black satin dress, mini black cocktail dress with organza ruffles, black velvet and sequin dress… There were quite a lot actually that I wanted to share (I cn’t say I lacked subject matter!) so a second post might be soon on its way…
