As the final day of the Cannes Festival 2011 draws nearer, the little black dresses hastily gather on the red carpet.  We have literally witnesse a wave of LBDs climbing the stairs these past few days… To discover here. May 18th and 19th were a delight for the eyes, as proved the team for Melancholia, by Lars von Trier on the 18th, an that of Pourquoi tu pleures ? by Katia Lewkowicz on the 19th.

Cannes, aka, Black on Red

Wednesday evening, for the climb up the stairs of the film Melancholia, lthe actresses were reunited : Charlotte Gainsbourg, Kirsten Dunst and Charlotte Rampling, the former two appearing in semi transparent dresses. Despite being sisters in the film, for the evening they demonstrated their differences in style on the red carpet. While Kirsten opted for a Rodarte creation in tulle and frills with a deep plunging cross over neckline, a mermaid-like figure in transparency, Miss Gainsbourg prefered a laid back chic look that constrated with anything seen on the red carpet up until now. Late on in her pregnancy, she decided to hide nothing with her entirely transparent black shirt, worn over a boneless lace bra, paired with a black skirt nonchalantly tied (which at first glance looks like a dress).

The cast for the film La conquête with Laetitia Casta, Milla Jovovich, Eva Herzigova and Doutzen Kroes impressed us also, and Doutzen who recently annonced that she would fly into space in 2014 for the company Space Expedition Curaçao grants her recognition both in matter of style and character.

Thursday 19th of May, it was teh turn of the team for La Piel que habito by Pedro Almodovar : Elena Anaya was the most chic in her sumptuous ultra-glamorous bustier sequin dress. The young and forever charming Zoé Félix, arrived in a twin long bi-fabric dress signed Fendi. Columbian actress Martina García was also wearing Fendi. L’actrice Rossy de Palma, demonstrated with great effect her extravagant style with a black bustier over a transparent petticoat, a white tulle bolero, the look sublimated by dark black stoned jewellery, and a hispanic red ribbon… some dare more than others. At her side, choreographer Bianca Li appeared like a creature made by Jean-Paul Gaultier Couture (if you’re thinking Pin-Up it’s because you might remember Dita Von Teese wearing this for his fashion show).

The black dress is an icon whose importance goes beyond our european and maerican borders… Proof here with this picture of the team for the japanese film Ichimei by Takashi Miike. They too have their “little black kimono”.

Finally we’ll finish on a few words concerning the film Pourquoi tu pleures? taht was presented to the public this week. Emmanuelle Devos is the centre role of the first full-feature film of french director Katia Lewkowicz, and she is clearly not alone in having chosen for the inevitable, perfect, and feminine, little black dress.
