The Anvers Fashion Museum (MoMu), in association with Woolmark, has dedicated an exhibition, running until August 14th 2011, on knitwear. Very comfortable and comforting, if you haven’t yet one in your wardrobe, let me tell you, it is a must-have. “What?? A little black knit dress in the summer??!” are you saying ? Well yes, there are many different types of knits, one for every season !
An exhibition to counter all misconceptions
Well precisely, MoMu aspires to achieve by this exhibition a demolition of all misconceptions around knitwear (it scratches, it looks old, it’s what my nan does when she’s bored, it’s unfashionable, it’s what you wear on a wet farm day…), through a discovery of knitwear under all of its various aspects, which will surprise more than a few ! Whether it be its production or use, both have seen a radical change thourghout the decades and centuries, which MoMu analyses here, illustrating its history with rich visual contents; works from Haute Couture (Chanel, Patou, Elsa Schiaparelli), as well as designer pieces (nationally and internationnaly reknown designers such as Vivienne Westwood, Ann Salens, Missoni, Sonia Rykiel), ready-to-wear collections, and avant-garde works by more recently discovered designers that are rapidly influencing the international fashion realm (Sandra Backlund, Martin Margiela, Mark Fast), all of which completes a carefully selected and broad variety of historical clothing.
Knitwear in Fashion : Unravel is an unexpected, delightful and inspiring exhibition that shouldn’t be missed !
Still doutful ? If so, have a look at these three black knit dresses I picked out from our website, personal all-time favourites. So easy to wear and comfy, and fashionably feminine. So, still think knit is for granny ?
